Traveling to the Workshop

The workshop will be held in the Seismology Building on the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory campus.


Driving Directions:
  

From the northeast - Take 287/87 west across the Tappan Zee Bridge (no toll westward, $5 toll going east) and take the first exit on the other side of the bridge (Exit 10 toward 9W and South Nyack). Follow signs for 9W south. Continue 7 miles on 9W and the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory will be on your left (before you see signs for the Palisades Interstate Parkway).

From the south - Take 95 North until the exit for US 46 E toward the George Washington Bridge and Palisades Park. Follow signs fro US-9W/Fort Lee/Palisades Pkwy. Take the Palisades Parkway North until exit 4 (toward US 9W). At the bottom of ramp, turn left at the light and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory will be on your right.


Parking

There is usually plenty of parking on the Lamont Campus. See the map below for the designated parking locations. When arriving at Lamont, please inform the security guard at the front gate that you are attending the seismology student workshop.

Public Transportation Options

The Red and Tan bus line (operated by Rockland Coaches) has a stop directly outside the gates of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. The stop is called Palisades and is a 40-45 minute bus ride from the Port Authority Bus Terminal at Times Square.

The New Jersey Transit, Amtrak, and Long Island Railroads have stops at Penn Station, NYC which is just 8 blocks from the Bus Terminal.

The Metro North stops at Grand Central Station, an easy subway ride on the 7 or S trains to Times Square.


Lamont Shuttle

The Lamont Shuttle that runs from Columbia's main campus to the Lamont campus is located on W 120th St between Broadway Ave and Amsterdam Ave (next to the guard booth in front of Columbia's Teachers' College). On Friday, shuttles in each direction leave every hour, on the hour. On Saturday, there is one shuttle from 120th St to Lamont at 9:00am and one shuttle back to the city at 5:00pm. The talks on Saturday will finish in time for the shuttle back to the city for those leaving NY that evening. The shuttle schedule can be found at the link below.


Hotel transport

For those staying at the Orangeburg Holiday Inn, we will be able to offer limited transport from the workshop to the restaurant and then hotel on Friday evening, and from the hotel to the workshop on Saturday morning. If you are driving to the workshop, we hope that you will be happy to offer lifts to those without cars, in addition to the vans we have hired.
