Paleoclimate

Paleoclimate scientists attempt to understand fundamental aspects of the Earth's Climate System by using natural recorders of past climate change together with climate models to identify regional, hemispheric or inter-hemispheric climate patterns, and to provide the baseline for ongoing and future climate change. These disciplines use marine and terrestrial climate archives (including ocean and lake sediments, fossil corals, speleothems, ice cores, terrestrial sediments, tree rings etc) to create a record of climate changes and variabilities ranging from sub-annual timescales to millions of years. Research interests within the department include reconstructing changes in ocean chemistry and circulation, changes in the carbon cycle, in temperature and precipitation patterns, sea-level and global ice volume, atmospheric circulation and aerosol changes, mountain glacier fluctuations and changes in land-ocean interactions. We use biological, chemical, mineralogic, and isotopic measurements together with climate models to develop a global scale perspective on our climate system. The Paleoclimate faculty includes Columbia University geologists, biologists, geochemists, atmospheric scientists as well as scientists at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and the American Museum of Natural History.

Geochemistry, isotope geology, how the earth works

The Earth is an incredibly dynamic planet. Throughout its four and a half billion year history, magmas generated in the mantle have been creating crust, which in turn has been mixed back into the mantle by subduction. Formation of the continents and the core have resulted major chemical differentiation of the planet. The combination of chemical fractionations and the decay of radioactive elements in rocks impart "fingerprints" that we use to understand how these processes work, and to determine the timing of events.

These fingerprints are among the most versatile geological tracers. Their applicability extends across the spectrum of the Earth sciences and is limited only by our creativity and imagination. Among the most exciting aspects of isotope geochemistry is that we are neither "hard-" nor "soft" rockers, neither "Quaternary-" nor "Archean" geologists.

At Lamont, we are using chemical and isotopic tracers in studies ranging from deep Earth processes and evolution to Quaternary climate change. Our igneous studies include the history of continental growth as well magma formation processes at ocean ridges, ocean islands, and island arcs. Low-temperature studies include tracing element fluxes in the present-day oceans and through time, and quantifying the timing of climate change through dating of sediments only thousands of years old. The next decade promises to be the most exciting yet as new analytical techniques will extend our arsenal of isotopic tracers.

I found Lamont to be an amazingly exciting place to be a Ph.D. student, and this is why I returned as a faculty member when the opportunity arose. Its combination of great intellectual breadth and range of resources and friendliness make a great environment for research and education.

My research is geared toward understanding global climate change, including current anthropogenic driven changes and past changes to the Earth System.  I investigate the natural modes and underlying forcing mechanisms of past climate variability, with the goal of developing a better understanding of how the Earth System responds to natural and human-induced perturbations.

My research is mainly focused on two areas: 1) characterizing exposure of pollutants and investigating adverse health effects of these pollutants in urban environments and 2) apportioning contamination sources and assessing environmental impact related to human activities (e.g., the fate of contaminants after Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and impact of hydraulic fracturing on water and air quality).

The ability to unambiguously identify and measure trace organics is a prerequisite for testing mechanisms that impact their behavior and fate.  At LDEO, I have established an organic geochemistry laboratory from scratch with the ability to extract organic contaminants from environmental samples (waters, soils, sediments, aerosols) and biological samples (e.g., fish tissue and human exhaled breath condensate), to conduct purification and separation of organics of interest from the complex mixtures and matrices, and to identify and quantify those compounds using modern chromatography techniques. As I have built up these abilities at LDEO, I have continued my research in Environmental Geochemistry (e.g., source apportionment in the NY metropolitan area) and expanded into other areas, including tracing spilled oil in Gulf of Mexico, bioaccumulation and bioavailability of PAHs, bioremediation of contaminated soil/sediments, and the relationships between indoor and personal exposures to these contaminants and adverse respiratory outcomes related to the exposure among children living in NYC and Beijing, China.
